Fight Song Countdown

My name is Chris, and I have a college football problem.

With the long, dark offseason of 2010 drawing to a close, I got an idea. This idea came to me after watching yet another replay of the 2009 Big 12 Championship Game on ESPNU. For the uninitiated, ESPNU provides assistance to people like me throughout the offseason by showing college football games on television. Like methadone to a junkie, these replays help us with our withdrawal symptoms. In my case, the replays never fail to remind me of my love of the pageantry of the game. Apart from the traditions, the rivalries, and the storylines, I love the music and the bands.

My idea was to organize a list of the best favorite fight songs and rank them – posting a new one every day for 15 days until September 2, 2010, the day when my addiction will once again consume me. I’m doing this for my own enjoyment, mainly as a way to pass the time and prevent a last-minute bout of insanity.

In ranking the songs, I’ve tried to remain as unbiased as possible, but no college football fan can claim complete impartiality. With that in mind, here is my full disclosure: I went to a FCS school, grew up a Notre Dame fan (yeah, I know), and have been known to hate on BYU with a great deal of commitment and fervor.

In the unlikely event that anyone ever reads this, there is a good chance it will cause some controversy. Does that last sentence make sense? Of course it does. MOVING ON. Here’s the deal – your alma mater’s fight song will always be the best and anyone who suggests otherwise is a moron. Believe me, I understand that. I honestly do get the goosebumps when I hear my own school’s fight song. Just remember: if you disagree with my choices or opinions, you are wrong.
